In November, Super Mario RPG will be released for the Nintendo Switch, a remake of the classic Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, released in 1996 for the SNES. Nintendo is now showing off what the remake has to offer in a public trailer. Among other things, it concerns the different characters and the combat system.
Classic role-playing games in a new form
In Super Mario RPG, Mario and his friends don’t encounter Bowser even once, but rather an even bigger villain: Exor the Iron, who has destroyed the Star Road and seems to have more plans for the Mushroom Kingdom. In order to thwart the villain’s plans, Mario teams up with Bowser, but is also accompanied on his adventure by Princess Peach and two new additions, the cloud-like Mallow and the puppet Geno.
Battles in Super Mario RPG are turn-based, with four different commands available to players. Each character also has unique offensive and defensive special techniques. Anyone who shows a sense of timing in conflicts not only deals increased damage, but also charges a combat meter. If they are filled, particularly effective triple techniques can be performed. The technology that is activated depends on the current team composition, which players can change at will.
Role-playing newcomers can switch to a particularly easy difficulty level in Super Mario RPG, meaning Mario and company level up faster and enemies are easier to defeat. In addition to the story mode, there is also a boss mode and a number of different mini-games.
Super Mario RPG will be released exclusively for Nintendo Switch on November 17, 2023.
