Vienna – Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 10:37 pm
Since Saturday evening, it was finally certain that the Austrian Football Association team had a chance to participate in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Although Franco Foda’s team failed to qualify for the World Cup, they secured a place in the qualifying rounds in March thanks to the UEFA Nations League. Austria won Group 1 of the United Nations League in the fall of 2020, ahead of Norway, Romania and Northern Ireland.
After Spain, Italy and Belgium, France also closed its qualifying group in second place, which is why at least four of the five teams placed against ÖFB in the Nations League classification will have a place in the playoffs through the World Cup qualifiers.
There are three “tracks” to the World Cup qualifiers. The World Cup card is played on each “track”. The semi-finals (March 24-25) and finals (March 28 and 29) will be played in one match only. The ÖFB team is not seeded, so the semi-finals should be played away from home.
The World Cup qualifying draw will take place on November 26 in Zurich.
