Drammen – Friday, 03.09.2021, 19:52
Austria’s national under-21 team should suffer its first defeat in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers. After the inaugural victory against Estonia, the Austrian Football Association youth admitted their bankruptcy with a 1:3 ratio in Norway.
The Austrians get a tailor-made start at Drammen and take the lead in the 12th minute: Adamo uses a defensive foul at the home side after a long ball from Greml and clears the net.
The command of Werner Grigorić’s forces lasted only five minutes, however, Jürgen Strand-Larsen almost equalized in the 17th minute. Then, the ÖFB team was unlucky twice: first Schmid hit the crossbar (27), shortly before the break, aluminum blocked once Dimako’s other hit (41).
After the break, Norway came out of the cab stronger and is rewarded for this: Noah Holm withdrew from the penalty area leaving no chance for OFB goalkeeper Heidel (61).
In the final, Austria has a high chance of a draw through Schmid, but again, the stick is on its way. Instead, the Norwegians made it all clear with Erik Bothem’s goal (84th place).
Austria must relinquish the top of the table, and new runner-up in Group A is Finland after a 3-0 win in Estonia.
For the ÖFB youth, the European Championship qualifiers continue on Tuesday (6:00 pm) in Reed against Azerbaijan. Group winners and best runner-up buy an EM ticket. The remaining runners-up in the group determine the remaining European Championship participants in playoff duels.
