Any government that wants to play a leading role in the EU needs a very close relationship with the US government. Currently and for at least a decade, EU countries are unable to defend themselves and ensure security and political stability in their geographical environment. They depend on America for no fault of their own. At the same time, disruptions in global manufacturing and supply chains and the increasing importance of backlogs in the production of strategic goods have spurred plans for domestic industrial development in the three centers of the global economy, namely the US and China. and the European Union. The EU is dependent on reaching an agreement with the US that the policy will not result in any far-reaching protectionism. Finally, the United States competes with China on the norms and institutions that shape dominance in international relations. That is why coordination between the United States and the multi-voiced EU is so politically important. The EU Commission cannot make these agreements, which is why the governments of the main EU countries must take on this task if they do not want to ignore them as EU governments have done for the past 30 years.
The federal government continues to aim for Germany to exercise such a leadership role. In the past year, this claim was much higher. The transition from the old German foreign and defense policy to the current one was many times more difficult. President Biden had already been to Poland twice, but the fact that the flight time to Berlin did not fit into the schedule was a sign of this. Olaf Scholes’ opening visit to Washington preceded the Russian attack and was still characterized by questions about Nord Stream 2.
