Austrian oil, gas and chemicals group OMV has received approval from the authorities in Norway to develop and operate the Burling gas field in the North Sea. The first wells are scheduled for construction in the third quarter of 2026, and gas and condensate production is expected for 2028. The total estimated recoverable reserves are expected to be around 45 million barrels.
OMV, which operates the field, owns a 30 percent stake. The Norwegian state energy group Equinor owns 40 percent, and the Norwegian oil and gas company DNO 30 percent. According to previous information, OMV and its partners are investing nearly 900 million euros in the development of the gas field.
“Berling is one of our most important natural gas development projects and is working to increase the proportion of natural gas in our portfolio as outlined in the OMV 2030 strategy,” said OMV Executive Board Member and Responsible for Energy Business Area, Berislav Gasu. Gas and condensate volumes are expected to boost Norway’s position as a major supplier of natural gas to Europe.
The Birling gas field is located in the northwestern part of Norway, about 235 kilometers from the coastal city of Kristiansund. The nearest center is the Equinor-operated Asgard B platform, located about 23 kilometers to the southeast.
