One less DFB contender: USA pulls out for 2027 World Cup

The host for the 2027 Women's World Cup will be announced on May 17 in Bangkok. After South Africa, Germany's other rivals, the US and Mexico, have now halted its application – and postponed it to 2031.

At the end of November 2023, the South African football association SAFA announced that it did not apply to host the 2027 Women's World Cup, but instead the 2031 competition.

Lessons can be learned from the 2026 Men's World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States. “Hosting the World Cup is a huge undertaking — and with more time to prepare, the impact can be maximized around the world,” said Cindy Barlow Cohn, president of the U.S. confederation.

Two and a half weeks until decision

This means there are only two applications for 2027: Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium – and a joint application from Brazil. The decision will be taken at the FIFA Congress in Bangkok on May 17.

If successful, Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund, Dusseldorf and Cologne will be the German venues. The TFF last hosted the Women's World Cup in 2011. “I believe we can deliver a World Cup with better infrastructure and organization, shorter distances to the stadiums and better monetary returns, which will flow back into the global development of women's football,” said DFB sporting director Nia. Künzer recently made the announcement in a kicker interview.
