“The US part was shot,” director Benjamin Wagener of Schwegenheim announced to RHEINPFALZ am SONNTAG this week, after an eight-person film crew from the Palatinate spent about three weeks on the road in the US in June and July. To be more precise: Pennsylvania Dutch is a special type of Palatine dialect in the “states” area. As reported in February, the production of the second film “Hiwwe wie drivwe” is currently pending, Wagoner’s first 90-minute documentary attracted 20,000 cinemagoers in 2019. This time, the film crew looked for Palatinate roots and similarities to “Hive Wee Drive” across the Atlantic, with singer Monji El Beji of Palatinate rock band Fine RIP as the lead actor. Wagener and his band attended the Kutztown Folk Festival in the heart of Pennsylvania-Dutch-Land and were on tour in Berlin, Ohio. “The Lutherans there are very easy to understand,” reports the director. The shooting will soon resume in the Maldives. The film will not be in theaters until the end of 2023 and will cost almost 200,000 euros. Part of that is getting together through crowdfunding.
