Tyrolean Simon Bucher swam to the semi-finals in Melbourne on Tuesday at the start of the 50m World Short Course Dolphin Championships.
In 22.44 seconds, the 22-year-old improved his Austrian record, which was almost a year old, by 0.26 seconds and finished thirteenth. Lena Krondel finished 14th in the 200-meter individual medley, but was eliminated, as were Caroline Bielhach (100-meter backstroke) and Jan Hercog (1,500-meter freestyle).
Good start to the World Cup
Bawshar is hoping for another increase in the semi-finals and sees chances for the final. “It wasn’t a perfect race, and I didn’t stop particularly well,” said the athlete, who is training in Linz. Krondl missed the senior eight final by 1.19 seconds, but in 2:08.44 minutes she beat her personal best time from last year’s World Championships in Abu Dhabi by 1.32 seconds. “It was a really good start to the World Cup,” explained the 25-year-old.
Pilhatsch only finished 29th in 59.71 seconds, and last semi-final place went in 57.54 seconds. Styrian said she ran out of steam at the end of the race. “But I can draw good conclusions in the 50s,” she was looking forward to competing in which she became vice world champion in 2018. Hercog didn’t have that experience. The 24-year-old made his World Cup debut in the pool. At 15:00.36 minutes, he was ninth at the World Championships 10 km open water nearly four seconds faster than his best time and was eighth before the heat fastest.
