The rumor first spread a few days ago: Viktor Paulsen (31) is leaving FC Schalke 04. Now one of the promotion heroes is almost certain to move to North American Major League Soccer (MLS). Iceland international’s destination: US capital Washington. His new employer is said to be DC United.
According to the information of “Sport1”, the players and the club have agreed on a change. The four-time MLS champions are expected to pay around €500,000 for Poulsen, who donned his football boots for New York RB for six months in 2012. New manager Wayne Rooney (36) has long been interested in the club. But it was confirmed only a few days ago. However, the 31-year-old Schalke and head coach Frank Kramer (50) is building on experience.
A long-term contract in Washington
At the training camp in Mittersill, sporting director Reuven Schröder (46) announced that the club believed in Paulson, but he did not want to rule anything out. “If there is ever a desire to take a different course from his side, we will talk later. But we are currently looking at Viktor at Schalke,” explained Schröder.
Paulson’s contract at Schalke ends in the summer of 2023. However, an extension beyond next summer is not considered a certainty. It looks different in Washington. The American franchise is said to be offering him a good salary and a long-term contract. Also, the 31-year-old’s family lives in Canada.
The transfer is expected to be completed in the next few days. A matchday 34 substitute in a 2-1 win at Nuremberg could be Poulsen’s last competitive appearance in a Schalke jersey.
