The fast-paced opener against Liverpool was followed by the first setback of Mauricio Pochettino’s young spell at Chelsea in the London derby. The Blues lost 3-1 at West Ham despite being outnumbered for more than 20 minutes. Talent Karni Chukwuemica scored the only goal of the day in the match – Naif Aguird, Michel Antonio and Lucas Paqueta scored for the Hammers.
The hosts got off to a perfect start at the Olympic Stadium. Midfielder Eguird fired the ball into the net after a corner kick from newcomer James Ward-Prowse in the seventh minute.
After conceding the goal, David Moyes’ team focused only on defensive work and was punished with a goal from Chukwuemeka (28). Shortly before the break, the guests got a great chance to turn the game around in the first round. However, Enzo Fernandez missed a penalty kick from Tomas Soucek to Alphonse Areola (43).
Instead, Pochettino’s team suddenly fell behind shortly after the start of the second half: Antonio put the ball soullessly into the left corner from a distance (53′). The Argentine responded to the default by substituting, which helped new signing Caicedo, who was snatched by Liverpool from Chelsea, to make his Blues debut.
In his premiere, the newcomer must also make the final decision late – albeit negatively for his new club. Despite a yellow and red card for Aguirre, who received his second yellow card in the 67th minute for a foul on Jackson, Chelsea went in vain until Caicedo fouled Emerson in injury time on his 16th trip.
City favorite Lucas Paqueta, whose transfer is threatening to win the treble due to violations of the betting ban, did not miss the opportunity and made the final score 3-1 (90 + 5). So CFC is still waiting to win after the second round.
