Former US President Donald Trump has been fined nearly $1 million in his lawsuit against Hillary Clinton. Judge John Middlebrooks said Thursday that Trump has shown a “consistent pattern of judicial abuse” and sued to “advance a dishonest political narrative.”
In the lawsuit, which Middlebrooks dismissed last year, Trump accused Clinton of attempting to rig the 2016 presidential election. He accused his then-rival of wanting to convince the public that he had cooperated with Russia in his campaign and demanded $70 million in damages. Clinton lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election.
“The lawsuit should never have been filed,” Middlebrooks said in the court order. It was evidently insufficient as an appeal from the outset, the judge wrote, and “no rational counsel would have presented it”. Trump is “a sophisticated litigator who uses the courts time and time again to exact revenge on political opponents.”
Trump and his lawyer, Alina Heba, were sentenced to a total fine of approximately $938,000 (867,000 euros). (apa / afp)
