The referees at the Masters 1000 men's tennis tournament in Shanghai have a tough time on Tuesday.
The judges received harsh criticism from both Alexander Zverev and Frances Tiafoe, although the German Olympic champion, unlike the American, ultimately emerged victorious in the third round. Zverev now meets Belgian David Goffin.
Zverev, who is ranked third in the world rankings, entered into discussions with Swedish referee Mohamed Lahiani several times in the match against Dutchman Talon Grikspor.
Among other things, the 27-year-old was warned for exceeding the time limit when the score was 4:5 in the first set, and later received a warning for throwing his racket. “I haven't had any luck with the referees' decisions all year,” Zverev says out loud. After 2:47 hours, the favorite won 7:6 (6), 2:6, 7:6 (5), although this was only confirmed by the eighth match point.

Tiafoe's slip was a time violation against unseeded Russian Roman Saviolin, as he fouled out at 5:5 in the third set tiebreak.
Despite the protests of the US Open champion, who reached the semi-finals, Ecuadorian referee Jimmy Benoarjoti stuck to his decision. Tiafoe must continue the second serve, losing this point, the next point, and the match 7:5.5:7.6:7(5). As a result, the 26-year-old loser had no kind words for Benwarguti.
Last Monday, another strange incident occurred regarding the referee's participation in the second round match between Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland) and Flavio Copoli (Italy). The Swiss eventually lost his duel against the Italian due to a counting error (all information >>>).
This event was well attended. With South Tyrolean Jannik Sinner, Spaniards Carlos Alcaraz, Zverev, Serbian Novak Djokovic, and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the top five in the world rankings are also in the round of 16.
