Fans mourned his Iron Man character in 2019, but Marvel has ruled out a return. But not Robert Downey Jr. himself, who is now taking on the role of his former arch-nemesis.
Robert Downey Jr. played Iron Man for over a decade. He was killed off in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” This came as a shock to many Marvel fans, as the hero had been a fan favorite since his introduction in 2008. Marvel president Kevin Feige quickly put an end to speculation about a possible resurrection.
Now at least Downey Jr. is celebrating a surprise return — but not as Iron Man. He takes on the role of the villain, Victor Von Doom (aka Doctor Doom), the archenemy of the Fantasic Four. The announcement was made Saturday at the world’s largest comic convention, Comic Con, in San Diego.
“New mask, same mission”
“New mask, same job,” Downey himself said after unveiling Doom’s signature silver mask and green cape to cheers. You can see him in “Avengers: Doomday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which are set to hit theaters in 2026 and 2027.
Julian McMahon previously played Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four and its 2005 sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. In the 2015 reboot, actor Toby Kebbell was seen in the role of the megalomaniac.
Hit the box office
News of Downey's return comes as Marvel Studios looks to make up for recent box office failures. That's currently happening well with “Deadpool & Wolverine.” According to Disney Studios' estimates, the film grossed over $438 million (around €403 million) worldwide in its opening weekend.
In North America alone, the film grossed $205 million at the box office. According to Disney, this is the best domestic theatrical release ever for an R-rated film. (ABA/Ed.)
