The ÖTV contract player celebrates the Austrian’s greatest successes in a row since Dominic Thiem in 2011.
2015 Andrey Rublev (current ATP Rank 5), 2016 Seungchan Hong (ATP 197), 2017 Emil Ruusuvuori (ATP 61), 2018 Brandon Nakashima (ATP 134), 2019 Holger Röhn (ATP 6) – and 2023 Joel Schwarzler: Austria’s current greatest tennis talent sensationally entered the sometimes very prominent list of winners at the 2023 ITF World Junior Tour Finals in Chengdu on Sunday. The third-seeded Vorarlberg player (ITF 7) won the final in a left-handed duel against top-seeded Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco Mendes (ITF 2), his roommate in China’s Sichuan province, 6:3, 7:6 (6).
Just last week, Schwarzler achieved the Austrian youth’s biggest success since Dominic Thiem’s coup at the Orange Bowl in Plantation in 2011 by winning the Osaka Mayor’s Cup (ITF J500). The 17-year-old managed to achieve this already impressive feat in his young career after just one week. With this title, The Harder not only received a travel allowance of US$17,000, but also gained 750 points for the World Youth Ranking. On Monday, he will receive the best ITF ranking for an Austrian player since Thiem, who reached second place on January 3, 2011.
