For Microsoft, the long-running pirate game Sea of Thieves has been a huge hit on Xbox and PC. Is there even a PlayStation version coming?
According to a new report from Stephen Totilo Gamefile.news Microsoft has already been busy bringing Rare's long-running pirate saga Sea of Thieves to PlayStation. A source familiar with the matter confirmed this to Totilo.
Such a move wouldn't be entirely unusual for Microsoft, as the company has brought first-party titles to competing platforms in the past. For example, both Ori games were also released on Switch and titles within the Minecraft series are usually released simultaneously on Xbox, PC, PlayStation, and Switch. Is Sea of Thieves next?
Over the weekend, a Microsoft spokesperson did not want to comment on Totilo's information when asked and declined to comment. Since Friday, rumors have been circulating online that Microsoft may bring more previously exclusive games to other platforms in the future. This has also been reported, for example, by knowledgeable insider Jeff Grubb, who claims to have heard about Sea of Thieves for both PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.
On the other hand, Totilo can only report on PlayStation's plans based on his source; He knows nothing about the Switch version of Sea of Thieves. As far as the Sony console is concerned, it would be conceivable to release it at the beginning of 2024. Finally, it cannot be confirmed that Microsoft is still actively pursuing the plan with the PlayStation version.
Sea of Thieves was developed by Microsoft studio Rare and has been available exclusively for Xbox and PC since 2018. Recently, a larger expansion was released that incorporated the Monkey Island franchise into the game.
