Roma missed out on their Champions League place in Serie A after an embarrassing defeat. Coach Jose Mourinho’s team, sent to the stands by referee Mauro Piccini shortly after the break, lost sensationally 1-2 (0-1) to US Cremonese, who were bottom of the standings on Matchday 24. Roma remain one point behind their local rivals. Lazio is in fourth place.
For the promoted Cremonese, on the other hand, it was the first victory in the first Italian league season since 1996 after nine draws and 14 defeats. Striker Daniel Ciovanni scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute with a penalty kick.
During the match, France international Paul Pogba returned after more than ten months of injury. The 29-year-old world champion from 2018 came on in the 69th minute when the score was 2-2. Pogba played his last match on April 19, 2022 while he was still in a Manchester United shirt. Then he had problems with his right knee.
