There has never been anything like this during the NHL's nearly 106-year existence.
Kris Letang made history on Wednesday-Thursday night with five assists in the third, and never before has a defender provided so many assists in the third.
In all, Letang can celebrate with six assists in the Pittsburgh Penguins' 7-0 win over the New York Islanders. It was not necessary to search for the “first of the night” much longer.
Seven magical minutes from Letang
After the first half ended in a scoreless draw, the Penguins, especially Letang, stepped up the tempo midway through the second half and scored six goals in eleven minutes. Except for Raquel's goal that made it 1-0 (27th), the experienced defender set up all the other goals. In less than seven minutes, Letang can celebrate five assists.
In the final third, Letang completed the assist with his sixth assist.
The Penguins are also celebrating an important win over a direct opponent in the Capital Division. In the Eastern Conference, Pittsburgh is in 11th place, three points short of a playoff spot. Al Jazira ranks fourth with 41 points.
