Sony and Honda are planning to jointly launch an electric car that will have a built-in PlayStation 5. The plan for the product competing with the Tesla Model X – a portable game console with an AMD processor and an RDNA 2 graphics card – is very specific.
Gamble while the car drives all by itself?
In September, Sony and Honda formed a joint venture called Sony Honda Mobility. The new partnership company that aims to manufacture cars with built-in entertainment from Sony. First thoughts include, according to financial timesand vehicles related to music, movies and PlayStation 5.
“Sony owns entertainment content, services and technologies that move people. We adapt those assets to mobility and that’s our strength over Tesla,” says Honda President Izumi Kawanishi, successfully bringing apparent competitor Tesla into play. And he made it clear from a technological point of view that PS5 integration is certainly possible.
The first car model to appear as part of this partnership is expected to be launched in North America as early as 2025. It is not yet known what technology it will be equipped with. As a first launch, though, it should have some wow factors if Sony and Honda really want to compete with Tesla.
Another feature of the new Honda e-cars is self-driving. “To enjoy the space in your car, you have to make it a space where you don’t have to drive yourself. The solution to that is self-driving,” says Kawachi. This feature should definitely be on board vehicles. Maybe even the driver could use the DualSense controller. All of this will certainly take some time.
