The Haute-Marne region was particularly affected, with eight people suffering minor injuries, according to authorities. Some had to be treated in hospital for hypothermia.
In the municipality of Annieville, streets were flooded and “parts of the road were washed away,” Mayor Regine Bam told AFP on Sunday. Some roads remain closed and impassable.
Ten times more rain than usual
According to the prefecture, 10 times more rain than usual fell in an hour in the municipality of Bologna. Water rose more than a meter in streets and homes. Officials say the ground is now so saturated that further rain could lead to a “rapid rise in water levels.”

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin thanked “463 firefighters who participated in nearly 600 operations” on the X online service. “Now we must repair the enormous damage caused by these terrible storms.”
The orange alert is currently in effect for 15 provinces in the east of the country. However, the National Meteorological Directorate lifted it on Sunday morning. The rain front is now heading towards the southeast of the country, where heavy thunderstorms are expected on Sunday.
