Fantasy and comedy
Manga Jam Session mainly publishes Isekai manga, a genre in which the main character comes from our world and is transported to an alternate one. For example, in the sample reading that will be distributed on Saturday, is the first volume of «Fabineko». Yoshino and his colleague Sonia Auer also recommend the title as an introduction to the world of manga: «It's a mix of fantasy, action and comedy. And you immediately see what's possible in manga: the main character changes gender in the first volume. » In the comic, which also has strange undertones, the inconspicuous Tachibana is transformed in a strange world into a beautiful blonde girl, with all sorts of tasks to accomplish. Another manga that Yoshino and Auer recommend to anyone who wants to explore this genre is Freeze – After the Journey's End. In this case, Freeze is not a verb, but the name of a dwarf wizard.
Japan loves the unconventional.
Manga is a medium for young people, and there are a fair number of teenagers who are learning Japanese because of (and through) manga. The trends from Japan are quickly coming to Europe. But not all of them have taken over. “While fighting and action manga are very popular in German-speaking countries, non-mainstream genres are also popular in Japan because of the variety of topics, including manga about everyday experiences and those related to professions such as designers, farmers and office workers,” says Yoshino.
