The picturesque setting between the illuminated Schönbrunn Palace and the Gloriette attracts several thousand visitors each year – last year there were a total of 55,000 visitors. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's Summer Night Concert is now the most widely broadcast classical event in the world. It is shown on television in more than 80 countries.
Three works by the composer “Moldau” Smetana
The outdoor concert will be held for the second time this year by Latvian Andris Nelsons. Norwegian opera and song singer Lise Davidsen will take to the stage as a soloist with two songs from Richard Wagner's “Tannhäuser” and Giuseppe Verdi's “La Forza del Destino.”
The focus of this year's program is on European pieces. For example, three works by composer Bedrich (Friedrich) Smetana will be performed, including his most famous work: “Moldau”. Smetana is generally considered the father of Czech music. He died exactly 200 years ago.
