The United States won five of five points from four balls on the first day of the 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club. It's the third time in Presidents' Gus history that Team USA has completely dominated the first day. It was a bitter blow to the international team, which had not won in 26 years, even though many matches were close and decided on the 18th. After a close finish in the last edition, there was cautious hope before the tournament that the streak could be broken.
Missing some birdie putts from four and a half meters or less, the international team's weakest point seemed to be on the greens. However, the stroke statistics show that even though the USA international team was inferior on the greens, they lost a significant amount of strokes on their way from the tee to the green. This heavy defeat was particularly bitter because, historically, four balls have been the best discipline for an international team. Competing against Team USA in the foursomes will be a real challenge.
Team USA competed with five unprecedented pairings. Rookies Sahit Deegala and Russell Henley celebrated successful debuts along with Colin Morikawa and Scotty Scheffler. Keegan Bradley, playing with Wyndham Clarke, drilled the birdie putt for the Americans' fifth point and screamed out emotions that had been hidden for years.
