Tesla gets first approval to expand its factory near Berlin

The state of Brandenburg has allowed the American electric car company Tesla to expand its factory in Grünheide. After approval, another large hall can be built.

Tesla gets the green light from the state of Brandenburg for the first step in expanding the factory site in Gruenheide near Berlin. The government environment agency has given approval to build another large hall, the Brandenburg Environment Ministry announced on Tuesday. The American electric car manufacturer can now begin the first of three planned expansion phases. This also includes establishing infrastructure for storage areas, a battery cell testing laboratory and logistics areas. According to the ministry, all approved construction work will take place on land that Tesla already owns. The company could not immediately be reached for comment.

Tesla wants to increase its capacity to 1 million cars per year

The American group plans to double the capacity of its factory, which has been operating since 2022, to one million cars annually. This would make it the country's largest car manufacturer, surpassing Volkswagen's parent plant in Wolfsburg. The project was met with resistance from residents and Tesla opponents. In May, the local council in Gruenheide met under police protection and approved Tesla's plans to build a charging station. (Reuters)
