In an interview with the BBC in the summer, Paul McCartney announced one final “new” Beatles song.
On Thursday, it was officially announced that the song “Now Andthen” has been released. November 2 It seems. Based on a demo by John Lennon, whose voice was freed from all background noise thanks to modern AI technology, McCartney and Ringo Starr completed the track. George Harrison electric and acoustic guitars from 1995.
On the occasion of the Beatles documentary
The story of “Now and Then” begins in the late 1970s, when Lennon recorded a demo with vocals and piano at the Dakota Building in New York. In 1994, his wife Yoko Ono gave the recording to Paul, George and Ringo – along with Lennon’s demos of “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love”. The final two songs for the “Anthology” project were completed and released as “new” Beatles songs. The trio worked with producer Jeff Lynne on a rough mix of “Now and Then.” However, due to technical limitations of the time, it was not possible to separate Lennon’s vocals from the piano. So the song remained in the archive.
This is where Peter Jackson came into play. For the documentary The Beatles: Get Back, the Australian and his team were able to demix the mono recordings and isolate the instruments, vocals and all individual voices in the Beatles’ conversations using WingNut Films’ MAL audio technology. That paved the way for the 2022 Revolver mix, taken directly from the four-track master tapes. This raises the question: what can be done with the “now and then” demo? The team was actually able to isolate sound satisfactorily.
“crystal clear”
“John’s voice was crystal clear,” McCartney was quoted as saying in the broadcast. “It’s very emotional. We all play to it, it’s a real Beatles recording.” “We’ll never come close to feeling his (Lennon, P.S.) presence in the room with us again,” Starr adds.
In 2022, McCartney and Starr set out to complete the song. Lennon and McCartney share lead vocals on “Now Andthen”. Harrison’s guitar parts come from the failed attempt to complete the “Anthology” series song. Starr and McCartney re-recorded drums and bass, and Mecca added a “George-inspired guitar solo,” according to the broadcast. Strings was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles. Producer Giles Martin and McCartney also used original background vocal tracks from “Here, There and Everywhere”, “Eleanor Rigby” and “Because” and combined them into “Now and Then”.
The song will be available digitally and on vinyl. On November 10, new versions of the “1962-1966” (“Red Album”) and “1967-1970” (“Blue Album”) exhibitions from 1973 will be expanded with a total of 21 songs, which will suit many people. It was my introduction to the world of The Beatles. There are now 75 tracks on both albums (CD and vinyl) combined – from the first single “Love Me Do” to the final song “Now Andthen”. The songs were remixed by Martin and Sam Oakle at Abbey Road Studios, also in Dolby Atmos format (available digitally). In addition, journalist and author John Harris contributed new articles as line notes.
