For Austria, the European Championship adventure is over! ÖFB lost 1-2 to Turkey in the round of 16 in Leipzig.
Rangnick's team suffered a shock early on. Christoph Baumgartner wants to clear a corner in the first minute, the ball rebounds to Stefan Bosch and from him towards goal, goalkeeper Patrick Bentz clears the ball a little away, and the beneficiary Merih Demiral flicks the ball from close range to give the Turkish lead.
The Austrians are reacting well to this at the moment. In the fifth minute, Baumgartner missed a ball just a few meters from the goal line, just centimeters.
After that it will be difficult for the ÖFB team. The Turks shift their focus to defense. Rangnick's team does not show much creativity.
After a first half with few chances, Austria had to go to the dressing room with the score 0-1.
Demiral assembles a double pack.
After the break, the ÖFB team with the joker Michael Gregoritsch and Alexander Pras appeared more active.
Marko Arnautovic had a golden opportunity in the 51st minute, but Turkish goalkeeper Mert Gunuk saved it.
And at this point the Turks struck. Merih Demiral scored with a header from a corner kick to make it 2-0 (59').
Gregory with a goal
But Austria show a reaction. Bosch passes a corner kick to Gregoritsch who scores the next goal from close range (65).
And then Austria continue. However, this is not easy at all against the deep-lying Turks. In the 84th minute, Baumgartner headed the ball from a cross but it clearly missed the target.
In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Baumgartner found another great chance, but Gunnock made a strong save.
In the end, it was not enough to score the second goal for the red-white-red. This is how the tournament ends for the ÖFB team in Leipzig. Turkey, on the other hand, continues its journey in the quarter-finals against the Netherlands on Saturday (from 9:00 p.m. live >>>).
