The heat wave brought Linz a tropical night

In the city of Linz, 21.5 degrees were measured, in the city center in Vienna 21.1 degrees and 20.8 degrees at the Buchberg-Warte measuring station in Lower Austria. However, it’s not the first tropical night of the year, recorded on the night of June 9, as reported by ZAMG.

In recent years, there has been a tropical night every June at one or another of the ZAMG measuring stations. It was most extreme in June 2019 with June 13 and June 2003 with twelve tropical nights. The record for all months is 21 tropical nights in August 2003 in downtown Vienna.

Prior to the 1990s, tropical nights in June were a rarity in Austria. In the 118 years from 1872 to 1989, there were only six tropical nights at the ZAMG Vienna Hohe Warte weather station. In the 31 years from 1990 to 2020, there were actually 38 tropical nights.

Due to the high temperatures, the plumbers’ union called on all owners of gas heating systems to regularly maintain thermal baths. Because on particularly hot days, the heat in the chimney can stop. In the case of poorly maintained thermal baths, standing water can lead to the formation of odorless, colorless, and toxic carbon monoxide in the room in which the heater is installed. A pollutant is fatal if the volume of the fraction in air exceeds four percent.
