The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has decided on its work program for the next six years. As before, several interim reports are planned, which will be followed by a so-called synthesis report at the end of 2029 that will summarize the findings, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change announced on Saturday. Therefore, the Committee will continue to work in its current way of working.
Scientists and environmental activists called on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to change its course in light of the urgent need to combat climate change and to publish its findings more quickly in the future instead of extensive reports.
The new work program was adopted on Saturday by “more than 300 delegates from 120 countries” after four days of discussions and an overnight round of negotiations, reflecting the difficulties in reaching consensus.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was established in 1988 by the United Nations Environment Agency (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Its mission is to impartially inform politicians of scientific findings on climate change and potential countermeasures. 195 countries belong to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. They send experts to prepare reports independently.
