The Jewish Museum Vienna, a museum of the Vienna Holding, opened the new exhibition entitled “Focus! Now! Maria Austria – Photographer in Exile” on June 20, 2023. This exhibition marks the first solo exhibition of the eminent photographer Maria Austria in Austria and showcases her life and work through her photographs .
Successful exhibition opening
Director Barbara Staudinger welcomed guests at the opening of yesterday’s exhibition: “Maria Austria’s view as an unconventional photographer – feminist and resistance. It is always a Jewish viewpoint she shows from her presence in Vienna and Amsterdam and on her travels. Forget it in Austria, from our audience.”
In her speech, curator Andrea Winkelbauer gave an overview of the exhibition and emphasized: “For me as a curator it was wonderful to immerse myself in the world of Maria Austria at the Maria Austria Institute in Amsterdam, to breathe in the air of Maria Austria, so to speak, and through the pictures up to my elbows , dig through negatives and contact papers and unearth these beautiful pictures.”
Author Martin Frijns reports on the biography of Maria Austria and provides insight into the photographic work of the well-known Dutch photographer. “If Maria Austria were allowed to choose a title, she would simply choose ‘I am a photographer’,” explains Frijns, summarizing the development of photography in Austria in three stages: “first ‘becoming a photographer’;” secondly the “Daily Photographer”; And finally, “Postmodern Photographer”.
The ceremonial opening speech was delivered by Michael Eichinger, Member of the State Parliament, who stressed the importance of the Jewish Museum Vienna within the Viennese cultural landscape. He also welcomed Helly Oestreicher as one of the last modern Witnesses of this time: “Mrs. Oestreicher, this gallery is not only committed to your aunt’s work, but it is also yours in a certain way—for it gives us the opportunity to welcome you to Vienna to welcome.”
The opening was accompanied by musician Shira Karmon.
