The Dallas Mavericks entered 2023 with a narrow win, as billionaire Mark Cuban’s team beat New Year’s Eve (local time) in the National Basketball Association (NBA) 126:125 over the Texas arch-rival San Antonio Spurs.

In the Texas Derby at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, the Mavericks broke 17 points midway through the third quarter and looked on their way to an unchallenged sixth straight victory. However, San Antonio made the game exciting again with a comeback. Viennese Jakob Pöltl played an important role, scoring 8 points and 7 rebounds in the final section alone. His team came close to one point five times, but neither equalized nor advanced.

Keldon Johnson was the Spurs’ leading scorer with 30 points, and returned to action with the Brooklyn Nets on Monday. The team from New York has an 11-win streak after a 123:106 away win over the Charlotte Hornets. Kyrie Irving with 28 points and Kevin Durant 23 points were the top scorers.

In Game 1 of the Western Conference, the Memphis Grizzlies won 116-101 against the New Orleans Pelicans. For Ja Morant in the winners’ dress, there were 32 booking points.
