The new Linux desktop “Cosmic” from American system distributor System76, known for its Linux distribution, is particularly interesting for gamers. While Cosmic Epoch 1, the first public alpha release ever, is naturally still “incomplete” and partly “unstable” according to the developers, the follow-up release, Cosmis Epoch 2, which is also likely to be an alpha release, is said to be the first major feature update. System76 also wants to focus particularly on the consistency and adaptability of the newly developed graphical user interface, called the GUI (“Graphical User Interface”). Numerous themes with backgrounds and icons are intended to make Cosmic customizable.
The Cosmic desktop is based on the open source Rust programming language, a multi-paradigm programming language originally released by Mozilla, and uses the free Wayland display server protocol. The desktop also comes with its own native applications, called Cosmic Apps, which are also written in Rust. If you want to try out Cosmic Epoch 1, the easiest way to do so is with the latest alpha release of Pop!_OS. There are different versions for AMD, Intel, and Nvidia to choose from.
In addition, the first alpha version of the desktop is available for later Linux distributions.
