Pope Francis accepted the resignation of the Archbishop of Florence, Cardinal Giuseppe Bettori (77 years old), due to his advanced age. He will be succeeded by parish priest Gerardo Gambelli (54 years old). The Vatican announced the personal details at the same time on Thursday.
Bettori has headed the Diocese of Florence since 2008. He has also held various positions in the Italian Bishops' Conference, including that of its General Secretary.
The newly appointed Archbishop of Florence, Gerardo Gambelli, has returned to his native Italy for only a year.

From 2011 to 2022 he served as a priest of Fidei Donum in Chad, Central Africa. Among other things, he worked as a priest and responsible for pastoral care in the diocese of the capital, N'Djamena. From 2019 to 2022, Gambelli was a cathedral priest and vicar general of the Apostolic Vicariate of Mongo, covering eastern Chad.
