Rüsselsheim, March 2024 – The sportiest Lancia models return to the legendary logo with the new Lancia Ypsilon HF, first introduced in 1960 to the exclusive club of the most loyal customers. The HF logo has been reinterpreted to include historical elements such as the elephant mascot. Announced for the 2025 model year, the Lancia Ypsilon HF is purely electric and offers 177 kW (240 hp)* of power.

“The new HF logo will appear for the first time on the new Lancia Ypsilon HF and will henceforth adorn the most powerful car models of our brand. Just a few days after the presentation of the new Lancia Ypsilon, we are taking another step towards the renaissance of the brand. With the return of the letters HF we emphasize the sporty aspect of Lancia. With high-performance vehicles, we are bringing to life a dream that has excited our fans around the world. Pride in Lancia's great sporting past has been an important source of inspiration for our future car models. The round taillights of the new Lancia Ypsilon are reminiscent of the legendary Lancia Stratos from the 1970s, which were One of the first models to carry the HF logo“, comments Luca Napolitano, CEO of the Lancia brand. “Will we compete in the Rally Championship again with Lancia? “We are working on that,” he adds.

Lancia Ypsilon HF announced for 2025. Its all-electric motor delivers 177 kW (equivalent to 240 hp)*. This means that the high-performance version of the new Lancia Ypsilon accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds. In keeping with its sporty driving performance, the Lancia Ypsilon HF will have wide fenders and a low body.

New logo HF

Centro Stile Lancia reinterprets the historic logo with the letters HF and the elephant as a mascot. By using traditional colours, the designers simplified the ring and made it more refined. The combination of white, red and black is reminiscent of the Lancia Fulvia Coupé HF from 1966. The inclination of the letters refers to the complete Lancia Delta HF model of the 1990s.

The new logo, in its classic, progressive form, maintains a balance between history and the future. A tribute to Lancia's great heritage, it expresses innovation, distinct character and Italian style.

HF logo and Lancia racing team

The origins of the HF logo go back to the Geneva Motor Show in 1960. On the occasion of the trade show, a club was formed whose members had to buy at least six Lancias. For them, the letters represented the English term High resolutionin German “high loyalty”.

The initials HF as a model name first appeared on the brand's sports cars a short time later. These models included the Lancia Flaminia Coupé designed by Pinin Farina, the Lancia Flaminia Sport with Zagato bodywork, and the Lancia Flavia Coupé. In February 1963, Cesare Fiorio, together with a few sports drivers and enthusiastic owners of the brand's cars, founded a racing team called “HF Squadra Corse Lancia”. The chosen logo consists of the capital letters HF, in white on a black background, with four red elephants as the mascot. Underneath were the words “SQUADRA CORSE” in white on a red background.

The “HF Squadra Corse Lancia” celebrated its first successes with the Lancia Fulvia Coupé HF, which had been used in the rally since 1966. In 1972 the team won the Monte Carlo Rally with a Lancia Fulvia 1.6 Coupé HF. In the same year, Lancia claimed the International Rally Constructors' Championship, the predecessor to the World Championship established in 1973.

From 1974 onwards, the works team achieved three successive commercial World Rally Championship titles with the Lancia Stratos HF. In 1983, the Lancia Rally 037 won this title again, before the Lancia Delta in various versions won the Manufacturers' Championship six times in a row from 1987 onwards – a record that still stands today. In 1992, the rally winner was named Lancia Delta HF Integratede Evoluzione.

The elephant as a mascot – between myth and reality

Legend has it that the elephant first appeared around Lancia in 1953. Gianni Lancia (1924-2014), son of company founder Vincenzo Lancia (1881-1937) and the company's managing director at the time, apparently used the elephant as a good luck charm. The deciding factor in this choice is said to be the idea that elephants cannot be stopped once they are on the move. In Eastern mythology, the elephant is also a symbol of victory if it is depicted with its trunk outstretched. Lancia initially used the mascot in blue, later in red, and from 2025, the elephant will return as a good luck mascot – on board the new Lancia Ypsilon HF.
