Ahead of the scheduled conclusion of the global climate conference in Glasgow on Friday, the British presidency is expected to present a new draft of the final declaration in the morning. Within that day, it must then be decided whether the massive meeting with 40,000 delegates will be extended. Recent climate conferences have been extended by at least one day.
Before the latest surge, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres again warned about 200 countries not to show more ambition and a willingness to make concessions in the negotiations. In addition, all countries will have to “drastically” reduce their emissions of climate-damaging greenhouse gases. An abruptly closed climate agreement between China and the United States could bring movement to the talks. The two world powers are the largest emitters of harmful greenhouse gases.
