Tokyo, Bangkok, Berlin The world is watching the movement of Russian forces on the border with Ukraine. One source of conflict should not be overestimated in terms of its explosiveness: Taiwan. There is a risk of a direct confrontation between the leading powers, the United States and China.
Unlike Ukraine, where the U.S. president has rejected military involvement, the United States is openly prepared for anything: when asked recently if the United States would militarily defend the island state in the event of a Chinese attack, he replied: “Yes, we have a duty.”
The White House reassured that so-called “strategic ambiguity” in US policy has not changed. Accordingly, the United States supports Taiwan, but deliberately opens up its reaction to China’s attack on Taiwan.
