The United States has won the prestigious Ryder Cup against Europe for the 27th time.
The favorite Americans did not burn in the Whistling Straits singles in Kohler (Wisconsin) on Sunday and clearly won the 43rd edition. Bernd Weisberger, the first Austrian to qualify for the Ryder Cup, put in a good performance on the third day, but lost 2 and 1 in the opening lead against four-time winners Brooks Koybka.
The United States, who went into the final day with a comfortable 11: 5 lead after 16 fours, quickly lost 3.5 points. Colin Morikawa finally made the initial decision in front of 40,000 fans and determined the expected home win. Eight of the twelve players from the top ten in the world rankings, Captain Steve Striker’s young and powerful team showed no uncertainty at any point. The United States, which brought in six newcomers, is now leading the traditional competition from 1927 to 27:14.
McIlroy burst into tears
The European players, who used seven players from the last Ryder Cup in Paris in 2018, had to do without their own fans in a match that was postponed for a year due to an epidemic in the United States due to travel restrictions. Before the reigning champions, they were always an alien against the PGA Tour Americans, they were soft on the strongest tour of the world, but won four of the last five editions.
For example in “Miracle of Medina” in 2012, the Europeans won eight of the twelve singles on Sunday after a 6:10 deficit and a total of 14.5 to 13.5. Rory McIlroy & Co last won at home in Paris three years ago. However, this time in the United States they were miles away from holding the trophy, for which a draw would have been enough.
The Northern Irish man was very disappointed when he was rejected during the interview. “I’m so sorry. I wish I had done so much more for my team,” the 32-year-old lamented. “I don’t know how this team will go, but I’m proud of each of them,” McIlroy added.
Weissberger justifies the belief
After many years of effort, Wiesberger became the first Austrian to qualify for this prestigious continental competition in world golf, and after he played in red-white-red, he was used by Irish captain Badrek Harrington despite his rookie. The 35-year-old from Leigh South Berkeley justified his confidence and played well in all three matches. However, he was denied a winning point or at least a half point.
Austria was very close on Saturday morning. In the foursomes he co-led with young Norwegian Victor Howland — a 24-year-old debutant — 3-0 after 6-0 runs against Jordan Speith and Justin Thomas, but eventually lost with 2 ups. On Friday afternoon, Weissberger unveiled his Ryder Cup with Englishman Paul Casey. It lost by four balls to world number two Dustin Johnson and Olympic champion Sander Schaffel.
Weissberger added on Sunday. Against the former world number one Koybka, he delivered a thrilling match in which the lead changed several times. On the 16th Koybka regained the lead and after a tee was shot directly into the hole, this favorite was sure to win.
Due to the average age, the European team in Rome in 2023 can be considered completely different and, above all, younger. Austria once applied for this version with Fontana GC.
