22.05.2021 | (rsn) – Sensation on the Zoncolan: Lorenzo Fortunato of the Eolo wildcard team – Kometa beat the 14th stage of Giro d’Italia over the infamous Monte Zoncolan. The 25-year-old Italian from Bologna celebrated his first professional victory of his career in the recent ascent which was steep by 27 percent and won ahead of Jean Tratnik (victorious Bahrain / + 0:26). Both were part of the splinter group today, and so was Alessandro Covey, third of the day (Team Emirates UAE / + 0:59).

The fourth was Commander in Chief Igan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers / + 1:43), who followed Simon Yates’ attack (BikeExchange) about two kilometers from the end and then shook the British at the last 500 meters. Yates finished sixth of the day behind fugitive Bok Mollima (Trek – Segafredo / + 1:47) 1:54 minutes behind Fortunato and climbed to second overall.

For a short time it seemed as if Emmanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) was the third force among the class knights, but in the end the German had to face a few rivals – Damiano Caruso (Bahrain victor), Daniel Martinez (Eneos Grenadiers), Julio Ciccone (Trek) – Segafredo), Daniel Martin (emerging state of Israel), and as of Day 13. She accepts 46 seconds behind Bernal.

However, Buchmann maintained sixth place in the overall standings and came closer to Alexander Vlasov (Astana – Premier Tech) and Hugh Karthy (EF Education – Nebo), who faced bigger problems after the Yeats attack.

While Bernal expanded his overall leadership and thus also in the junior classification, Geoffrey Bouchard (Ag2r – Citroen) and Peter Sagan (Bora – Hansgrohe) maintained their leadership in the mountain and point rating.
