There is still the undisputed “Cannibal” Merckx with a total of 64 wins (34 in the Tour, 24 in the Giro, 6 in the Vuelta). Third-placed Cavendish with 50 wins (32/15/3) is slowly within reach of Italian Mario Cipollini (57 – 12/42/13).
Cavendish, who celebrated his 153rd career victory on Thursday, certainly won’t catch up with Merckx’s big boat on the list of most wins – whose 287 wins will likely remain unchecked for long. Cavendish isn’t even the most successful of professional riders: Andre Greipel, who is three years older than him, has won 158 times.
With seven wins, Cavendish is enjoying his most successful year since 2016, when he won ten races. In his 2009 dream season, there were an impressive 24 wins.
