Party colleague Bill Cassidy is convinced that the electorate will not elect someone to be president who must be convicted of a crime.
Former US President Donald Trump must withdraw from the race for the White House in 2024, according to a prominent Republican senator. Senator Bill Cassidy said in a CNN State of the Union talk Sunday that Trump cannot win the campaign against Democratic President Joe Biden. Voters will not elect a person to be president who must be convicted of a crime.
Cassidy is one of seven Senate Republicans who voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial in 2021. When asked if Trump should drop out of the presidential race, the Louisiana Republican told the broadcaster “I think so. But of course it’s up to him, and I think you You only ask for my opinion. But he will lose to Joe Biden if you look at the current polls.”
Trump is the leading Republican presidential candidate despite mounting legal troubles that include four criminal charges. Few of Trump’s opponents have publicly criticized the former president, even as charges against him have mounted. According to the latest polls, Trump is leading the Republican candidates for the 2024 presidential election by a wide margin, at 47 percent. With 13 percent of party voters approving, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis came in second.
Trump: “The public knows who I am”
Trump himself also spoke on Sunday, announcing that the first televised debate before the Republican primary would take place without him. “The public knows who I am and what a successful presidency I have had,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Therefore, I will not be participating in the discussions,” Trump said in capital letters. He indicated that not only would he steer clear of the first date on Wednesday, but he would also steer clear of his party’s internal televised debates.
There has been speculation about whether Trump might interview Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who was recently fired. That would be an insult to the Republican Party and the right-wing TV station.
