Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the US Senate for “significant help” in defense against Russia after approving a billion-dollar aid package. He wrote on the X site (formerly Twitter) early this morning: “This vote strengthens America's role as a beacon of democracy and leader of the free world.” Zelensky wrote that he is grateful to all Americans who continue to support Ukraine and realizes that the historic significance of this legislation transcends politics. “Ukraine's long-range capabilities, artillery and air defenses are important tools for the early restoration of a just peace.”
US President Joe Biden wants to deliver weapons and equipment to Ukraine this week. He made the announcement late in the evening (local time) after the US Congress passed billions in new aid to the country hit by Russia. “I will sign this legislation and address the American people as soon as I get to my desk tomorrow so that we can start delivering weapons and equipment to Ukraine this week,” Biden said.
In the evening (local time), with Senate approval, the US Congress approved billions in aid to Russia-hit Ukraine. The bill, which would provide Kiev with about US$61 billion (57 billion euros) worth of aid, must now be signed by US President Joe Biden, which is seen as a formality.
According to Ukrainian sources, Russian rockets hit a residential area in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city. Mayor Ihor Terekhov made the announcement via the Telegram messaging service. Derekov said information about the victims was still being verified. According to state radio station Suspilne, civilian infrastructure was destroyed in the attack. The air alert issued in the Kharkiv area was later withdrawn.
