Since yesterday, customers at the Unimarkt in Bad Gleichenberg have been standing in front of a closed door. The branch in south-eastern Styria has been permanently closed due to economic developments.
If you try to go to the home page of Unimarkt Bad Gleichenberg, the error message “404 – Unfortunately this link leads nowhere!” A symbol of the fate of the real shop on Grazerstrasse, which closed its doors forever yesterday at 5pm.
Notice on the front door
As the Kleine Zeitung reported, Unimarkt customers were informed of the impending closure via a note on the store's entrance door. But this was probably not necessary at all – after all, there was already a significant emptiness on the shelves.
Some employees were accommodated in other branches.
The branch in Bad Gleichenberg only opened in 2016 and, according to the Kleine Zeitung, employed 13 employees. They were offered accommodation at one of Unimarkt's branches in the area. About half of the employees took advantage of the offer, Unimarkt's marketing manager told the Kleine Zeitung.
Economic developments responsible for the closure
The marketing department told Kleine Zeitung newspaper that the reason for closing the site in Bad Gleichenberg was the high level of competition as well as the changing purchasing behavior of customers, which has changed in recent years. The closure is therefore a result of economic considerations.
