Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has admitted her agency failed to prevent an assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump. “We failed,” Shettle said at a congressional hearing on Monday. She described the attack as the worst Secret Service failure in decades, but at the same time withheld details, citing ongoing investigations. The Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting current and former presidents, has been under tremendous pressure since the July 13 assassination attempt on Trump, which he narrowly escaped. There has been criticism of the approach because, despite all the safety measures, the shooter was able to reach the roof with a direct view of the stage. There have also been reports that the young man had already noticed his behavior before Trump appeared, but the former president was still allowed into the theater.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., said the attack could have been prevented. Shettle does not deserve to remain in office. Meanwhile, Democratic Vice President Jamie Raskin noted that armed attacks are happening all the time in America.
