Greece celebrates another success in repatriating items of its cultural heritage. “Greece Newspaper” reports that 30 antiquities seized in New York were handed over to Greek authorities in a ceremony at the Manhattan District Attorney's office.
The items were illegally smuggled from Greece and seized by the Manhattan District Attorney's office. The collection includes works of art from prehistoric times to Roman to Byzantine, sculptures, ceramics and metalwork such as Minoan bronze figures.
Antiquities were seized from British antiques dealer Robin Symes and Michael Ward's gallery in New York. Their repatriation marks another victory in the fight against illegal trade in cultural goods.
Culture Minister Lina Mendoni acknowledged the importance of a strong partnership in the fight against this illegal trade and emphasized the successful collaboration between the Greek authorities and the Manhattan Prosecutor's Office, which had already led to similar successes in the past. (KNA)
