About 454,840 Nissan vehicles will be investigated, the U.S. Auto Safety Administration said Friday. This is due to reports of engine damage, which can result in loss of drive power without being able to restart.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the US Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has opened a preliminary investigation into the Nissan Rogue, Altima and Infiniti QX50 vehicles.
ODI reported that vehicle owners have reported mechanical problems, loss of power, knocking noise, metal pieces and chips in the oil pan of some vehicles equipped with KR15DDT and KR20DDET engines.
The Japanese automaker has tried to repair damage to the engines’ main bearings and L-joints by making several changes to the manufacturing process over time, the regulator said.
The ODI said it could expand the probe if necessary. (Reporting by Maria Ponnejath and Nathan Gomez in Bengaluru; Editing by Jason Neely and Sriraj Kalluvila)
