After the 1-0 defeat in Panama, the United States had a significant victory in the struggle for participation in the World Cup. Against Costa Rica, coach Greg Berholder’s team trailed in the first minute, but Sergino scored again in the 25th minute through a Test. When the score was 1: 1, it went into the gap.
Costa Rica goalkeeper Keeler Navas has not returned. The goalkeeper, who made his 99th international appearance, may have suffered a bruising in the first round — it is not yet clear how serious the injury will be, but the 34-year-old will have to go to Paris, where he will be with Italy at the gate of European champion Gianluigi Donnaruma, competing for a suspension.
In Costa Rica’s view, it was twice as bitter: Nawaz’s representative Lionel Morera was the main reason for the defeat: the LT AllJulans goalkeeper from the National League scored an unfortunate own goal. Timothy Weh shot the ball from close range to the post, from where it was a 2-1 final score on the line after Morera’s back ball (66th).
The United States increased their points tally to eleven points, beating Mexico in the table. Costa Rica’s chances of winning the World Cup are falling, with coastal state two points ahead of Panama in fifth place. Although the first three qualify directly for the tournament in Qatar, the fourth is playing against a representative from Asian, Oceanic or South American continental associations.
Davis scored in Canada’s victory
Third-placed Canada is all set for the World Cup. The North Americans won 4-1 against their table neighbor Panama, and Alfonso Davis, now returning to Munich, also entered the list of goal scorers. It put Canada on track for victory in the 66th minute after an early deficit.
Mexico, the group’s leading player, had a lukewarm victory in El Salvador. After Hector Moreno’s opening goal, player Raல்l Jimenez clarified everything at the break and scored 2-0. Mexico did not lose in the final.
