Vinyl record is still on the rise. For 15 years now, it’s been an upward trend in Germany, and in the UK, vinyl has now overtaken PlayStation gaming as the second best format for physical entertainment.
Vinyl outperforms PlayStation games
As reported by Complete Music Update, the UK Entertainment Resellers Association (ERA) has determined that sales of vinyl records generate more revenue than sales of PlayStation 4 and 5 games in physical formats combined. Only Nintendo Switch games have generated more revenue than vinyl so far in 2022.
With more than 19 million vinyl records sold in the US alone in July 2022 and a record 30-year UK sales rise last year, the report is a clear indication of the re-emergence of the ongoing format. According to ERA, vinyl record sales have generated £80.9m so far this year – up from £72.1m last year. Sales of PlayStation 4 and 5 games also increased, albeit slightly, from £74.7m to £79.6m.
He said in a statement Kim BaileyCEO of ERA:
“The rise of vinyl seems to be unstoppable. For the 74-year-old analog format, which trumps the technology of the digital age of gaming platforms, it is quite extraordinary. Ten years after it was once again in the public eye, the revival of vinyl is definitely unstoppable” .
The report also shows that vinyl continues to outperform CDs, with the latter bringing in £68.9m in 2022 so far – down 8.1% from the previous year. It comes eight months after it was announced that US vinyl sales for 2021 will exceed CD sales for the first time in 30 years.
