Many actresses have been banned from working in Iran. The background is violations of the Islamic dress code, as reported by the Hamshahri newspaper last evening.
More than a dozen women have now been banned from appearing in new films. Among those affected are Iranian film stars Tarineh Alidoosti, Afsaneh Baghegan and Katajon Riahi.
The Iranian Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance defended the work ban. Muhammad Mehdi Ismaili said today, according to a report by Tasnim News Agency, that wearing the hijab is a legal duty. The Ministry also controls the film scene, granting permits or issuing bans.
During the wave of protests that Iran witnessed in the fall of 2022, many actresses found themselves in the crosshairs of the judiciary because they demonstrated their solidarity with the movement. For example, Alidoosti and Rayahi have since been imprisoned. Actions are also underway against other filmmakers. Protests erupted over the killing of the young Iranian Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini. She died in police custody after being arrested on charges of violating the hijab requirement.
