The Dutch national football team is very close to qualifying for the 2024 European Championship in Germany.
Thanks to a late goal from a penalty kick scored by Virgil van Dijk (90+3), coach Ronald Koeman’s team won 1-0 (0-0) in Greece and finished in second place.
To qualify for the European Championship, the Orange still need to win one of their two remaining qualifying matches.
Wout Weghorst (28th) could have gone ahead. However, he missed a great chance to make it 1-0 when former German U21 goalkeeper Odyssias Vlachodimos missed his poor penalty kick.
Van Dijk saves the Netherlands from the point
Overall, the Dutch did not exploit their clear advantage sufficiently, and Steven Bergwijn (44th and 47th) was unable to overcome Vlachodimos.
Leipzig player Xavi Simons (53) shot the ball wide of the goal. Shortly before the end, Van Dijk saved the win with a penalty kick.
In the second group, France had already secured its ticket to the European Championship last Friday. The vice world champion is Greece’s last qualifying competitor on November 21. The Dutch still play against Ireland (18th) and Gibraltar (21st).
