Researchers discover the effect of nutritional supplements on dementia patients. Vitamin D appears to have an effect on disease progression.
Researcher on Hotchkiss Brain Institute University of Calgary and University of Exeter In Great Britain, the relationship between vitamin D intake and dementia was examined in more than 12,000 participants. It showed that people who reported taking vitamin D supplements may have a lower risk of rapid development of dementia.
Risks that promote dementia
The risk of dementia increases with age, as age plays a decisive role in the development of this disease. In addition to age and genetic predisposition, life conditions such as obesity, alcohol consumption, smoking, diabetes, and untreated hypertension can also have a significant influence on the occurrence of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
“We know that vitamin D has some effects in the brain that can have an impact on the development of dementia. […] “Our results provide important insights into patient groups that could be targeted in future studies of vitamin D supplements,” said Dr. Zahinur Ismail, study leader and professor at Cumming School of Medicine and the University of Exeter.
Vitamin D intake seems to particularly affect dementia in women
While taking vitamin D showed promising results in all groups, the team found that the effect of the hormone was much greater in women with dementia than in men.
Vitamin D: What functions does the hormone perform in the body?
Vitamin D performs essential functions for bone metabolism by promoting the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the intestines to the bones. In addition, vitamin D is important for the formation of proteins and is involved in the control of a large number of genes, so the hormone is likely to influence the development of chronic diseases or infections.
“The association with vitamin D in this study suggests that taking vitamin D supplements may be beneficial in preventing or delaying dementia, but we need clinical trials to confirm whether this is indeed the case.”
