Germany volleyball players advanced to the second group stage of the World Cup in the Netherlands and Poland on Friday evening (09/30/22) despite losing to Olympic champions USA.
National coach Vital Heinen’s team lost for the second time in a row against the top teams in Lodz, Poland, 0:3 (17:25, 13:25, 24:26), but finished fourth in the group. Six heads to the DVV women before the final clash with Canada on Saturday (4:00pm).
Against world number one USA, who lost just one set at the World Cup, Germany had to concede defeat just like the day before, losing 3-0 to defending champions Serbia.
Set the ball in the third round
Kimberly Truniok was the top scorer for the DVV qualifier, who missed a set point in the third round, with eight points. DVV selection won the first two games against Bulgaria (3:1) and Kazakhstan (3:0).
With Bulgaria and Kazakhstan both losing their fourth games on Friday and no longer ahead of the Germans, Heinen’s side can already plan for the second group stage. It will be played in two groups of eight from October 4 to 9, with the top four teams in each group advancing to the quarterfinals. Germany women have never won a medal at a World Cup.
