Bärbel and Manfred Sieber participate in the regional polio group in Allgäu. In her apartment in Füssen there is a lot of interesting information to be learned about polio, popularly known as polio. This is a viral disease that has been known since the nineteenth century and was feared at the time. For example, it can often cause paralysis with permanent damage to the legs and arms. Thanks to large vaccination campaigns – oral vaccination first became known in Bavaria in the 1960s – polio no longer exists in many countries. Although Europe is now considered polio-free, there is still a risk of infection from imported cases. That's why it's important to hold specialized conferences every year, stresses Barbel Sieber, who has personally had polio.
